Remo
TV Remote concept

How can the TV remote be redesigned/rethought to most effectively benefit usability, convenience and functionality?

Through user research in the Design Sprint Project I have created a concept to improve the existing remote control.

Project Goals:

  • Construct Research Question

  • Collect information and research

  • Conduct interviews and/or surveys

  • Create User personas and empathy maps

  • Find insights/key findings

  • Construct mood board, brand name and design language

  • Ideate through sketches and refine through modeling

  • 3D CAD model and rendering

  • Create Poster

the comprehensive tv remote concept

PROBLEM / PRODUCT
DESCRIPTION

The TV is a staple in almost every home. While the way we watch TV has changed considerably throughout time, the remote control has had little change or improvement.

Remo is a redesigned remote concept that effectively benefits usability, convenience and functionality.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

How can the TV remote be redesigned/rethought to most effectively benefit usability, convenience and functionality?

USER NEEDS
+ KEY FINDINGS

Joseph

Favorite type of TV shows/movies : Sci Fi and Science Documentaries

Being a young software engineer, Joseph is familiar with technology and has no trouble using it. His issues are more convenience:

“At the end of the day I always watch my shows, for me it’s always troubling finding where the remote is, it gets lost in my bed all the time. I also don’t like all of the tiny buttons.”

Elizabeth

Favorite type of  TV shows/movies: Romance, Drama, Reality shows
As an author, Elizabeth tends to read more than watch TV. Nevertheless, she has trouble with her eyes at night and it’s hard to distinguish between buttons on the remote.

“I always have trouble with my eyes at night.. I wish there was an easier way to feel or see the buttons. My TV remote gets dirty and it is hard to clean, I would prefer it be one smooth surface”

Mary and Dan

Favorite type of  TV shows/movies: Disney movies, Action films, News
This older couple has some trouble with all of the buttons and certain functions are too complicated.

Mary: “With my arthritis, I usually have Dan use the remote. The buttons are too tiny and close for me.”
Dan: “The remote controls are complicated for an old guy like me. It is tedious to even turn on the TV”

KEY FINDINGS - An ideal remote would include:

  • Less buttons (less confusion)

  • Possibly touchscreen

  • Rechargeable

  • More size variation of buttons to help with navigation when dark

  • A mechanism that helps you locate a remote under bed sheets or between couch seats

  • Something more simple and sleek (aesthetic)

  • Less complicated functionality

  • Other functions aside from remote

    • Connects to other devices/electronics

    • Aids with helping similar to siri or alexa

    • Functions as something needed in a living room/bedroom

concept

Remo aims to rethink the concept of a remote. It is user-focused and acts as a stationary console with an optional simplistic touchscreen remote. A centralized device controls main functions, while the remote easily allows control over any connected device including TV apps, Xbox, wii, blu ray or other devices
